The War of Summer's Ending
The Fall of the Empire
For several decades, life remained largely peaceful for the Changelings of Miami. Sure, the Mariel Boatlift and its influx of Cuban immigrants took some getting used to, and the introduction of La Llorona her Winter Court (and their favored method of fund-raising, the drug trade) shook things up for a bit, but overall, the prosperity of the city continued to climb steadily.
Until 1992, that is, when Hurricane Andrew struck. The storm ripped through southern Florida, leaving unimaginable devastation and death in its wake. Fears of the return of the Great Miami Hurricane (and its accompanying Fae masters) created a panic among the city’s Changeling population. Each Court sought to harvest more of its signature emotion, hoping to build up its stores of Glamour against a possible Fae incursion. A wave of violent crime swept the city, followed by paranoia. Some suspect that it was the incautious harvesting of Desire which led to the string of financial scandals which nearly bankrupted the city, and earned Miami the dubious title of “fourth-poorest city in America.” And through it all, the drug trade (and the Sorrow it engendered) became larger and more difficult to control. The drug wars continued to escalate, feeding the Summer Court’s wrath, paving the way for Grandfather Thunder’s most audacious move yet.
